Recommendatory System of Wireless Apparatus

Broadcasting station needed prevailing low cost and high quality radio.
However, low cost radio sets manufactured by small factory did not have enough quality.
To prevail the high quality set and parts, approval and recommendation system for radio and radio parts started from 1928 by Nippon Hoso Kyokai (The Broadcasting Corporation of Japan).

According to the rule of the system, radio set or component parts manufactured by general manufacturers were to obtain the approval and recommendation of the broadcasting authorities before put on the market. Before giving approval and recommendation, the broadcasting authorities were to test the qualities, construction and other specifications of radio set and component parts in conformity with rules.
Manufacturers were also required to be able to produce goods of the same quality at proper prices and their productive power was, too, taken into consideration before obtaining the approval from the broadcasting authorities.

Technical standard was suitable for crystal and battery set.
In 1934, recommendatory system of wireless apparatus was revised for new AC set.
The system of approval and recommendation applies to only low cost set and parts (tube, transformer, speaker, capacitor etc).

Since 1934, Approved radio and parts increased well. However, This approved system was not mandatory.
The greater part of Japanese radios was not approved.
To certify this system, high specifications and quality was demand. The cost of approved radio was increased.
To avoid high cost, many “using approved parts” radios put on the market.
These radios used one or two important approved parts such as power transformer or speaker.

Approved radio did not prevailed. Most of reason was high price.
The price of approved radio was twice as high as cheapest set.
The poor quality radio sold for popular conmsumption.
The qualities of cheap radios were very poor. Such radios sometimes failed and caused interference.

System and Registration Number

The system of approval and recommendation was certification for submitted sample. Test sample kept by Nippon Hoso Kyokai. If the sample passed test, approved number was given to manufacturer. They could indicate approval and recommendatory mark on their products and advertisement.

Approved number consists of 5 digits of numbers.
First 2 digits means types of radio and parts, Last 3 digits means registration number start from 011.

In 1938, Nippon Hoso Kyokai started “Hosokyoku-gata Radio”.
This is standardized radio. At the technical standard of “Hosokyoku-gata” radio, Approved parts used mandatory.
Nippon Hoso Kyokai became recommend their Hosokyoku-gata radio first.
Other approved radio became second choice.
From April 1st 1938, The approval and recommendationof radio set that has equivalent specification to Hosokyoku-gata radio was stopped.

At the war time, the price and supply of radio was controlled.
Hi-end radio such as superheterodyne receiver was official use only.
The official use hi-end radio was limited to approved set.
Expensive hi-end set added to approval and recommendation system.
From 1939, approval and recommendation of radio decreased. Last approved radio was listied in 1943.
